Cal AI Alternative: Bao, Compared on Photo AI, Price and Asian Dishes

October 25, 2026 · Updated November 2, 2026 · 5 min read

Bao is a calorie tracker for iPhone that covers Western and Asian food in one app (its listing names burgers and pasta as well as ramen and pho): it names dishes from a photo, scans a whole menu before you order, and has no ads on any plan. Here is how it compares with Cal AI on photo AI, price, Chinese interface and dish naming, from both apps' App Store pages read on October 31, 2026.

We are Bao, so we are not neutral, and we are not affiliated with Cal AI. That is why every competitor cell below is something its store page or its own site says, with the date. TechCrunch reported on March 2, 2026 that MyFitnessPal had acquired Cal AI and that the Cal AI app would remain independent.

Facts read from each app's App Store page and Apple's public listing data on October 31, 2026. Prices and ratings change; check the store before you decide. Bao's own rating is from 4 ratings in the US and 10 in Taiwan. Prices are the range of entries the store page shows, which does not say which entry is current.

Where Cal AI is stronger

Cal AI has 373,295 US ratings (read October 31, 2026) against Bao's 4. It is available on iPhone and Android, and Bao is iPhone only. Its own site says its photo scan uses the phone's depth sensor to estimate volume, and that it offers a 3-day free trial (read October 25, 2026, calai.app). Its own FAQ says “CalAI is about 80% accurate.” That is Cal AI's statement about itself, not our measurement, and we did not test it.

Where Bao is different

Bao scans a whole menu before you order. It reads the menu in the language it is printed in and gives an AI estimate for each dish, which is separate from scanning one plate after it is served. Our post on scanning a whole restaurant menu explains the difference.

Bao shows dish names in three languages, and its listings name Taiwanese dishes. Bao shows no ads on any plan. It does not use a depth sensor; it estimates portions from the photo and the dish itself. Bao is free to download with a 7-day free trial of Pro, then $4.99 weekly, $9.99 monthly or $59.99 annual. Every Bao figure is an AI estimate, not a lab measurement.

What we did not test

We did not run the same plates through both apps, so we make no accuracy claim either way. We did not install Cal AI, test its depth-sensor scan, or check how it names Asian dishes. We read public store pages on one day, and one page of Cal AI's own site on October 25, 2026.

Common questions

Is Cal AI free? Cal AI's App Store listing shows the price as Free, and the same listing says “FOOD SCANNING ANALYSIS RESULTS REQUIRE A SUBSCRIPTION.” Its own site, read October 25, 2026, mentions a 3-day free trial. We did not install the app, so we cannot say what the free download includes.

Cal AI vs MyFitnessPal: which is better? We compared listings, not accuracy, so we cannot say which is better. On October 31, 2026, Cal AI's US listing showed “Unlimited” entries from $2.99 to $29.99 and Simplified Chinese only, while MyFitnessPal's showed $9.99 to $79.99 across 10 Premium entries and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Neither listing names a Taiwanese dish.

Is there a Cal AI alternative for Asian food? Bao is one option that covers Western and Asian food in one app. It scans a plate or a whole menu, shows each dish name in three languages, and gives an AI estimate. Its US listing names burgers, pasta and steak as well as dim sum, ramen, bento, boba, pho, curry and Taiwanese street food; its Taiwan listing names braised pork rice and bubble tea (Chinese names, given here in English). Cal AI's listing names no Asian dish (re-read November 2, 2026), and we did not test how either app handles any dish.

Does Cal AI have a Chinese interface? According to its US App Store listing, partly. On October 31, 2026, the Languages field listed Simplified Chinese among 15 languages and did not list Traditional Chinese. We did not open the app to check how complete the translation is.

How accurate is Cal AI? Cal AI's own FAQ says “CalAI is about 80% accurate” (read October 25, 2026). That is Cal AI's statement, not our measurement. We have not tested Cal AI, and we make no accuracy claim about Bao against it.
