As of October 2026, four brunch foods counted by the real portion come out like this: one 7-inch waffle is about 218 calories, one medium bagel is about 289, a stack of three pancakes is about 524, and one cup of granola is about 575. These are estimates, and none of them include syrup, butter or cream cheese. Pancakes are the lowest of the four per 100 g (227), yet on the plate only granola is higher.
Four brunch foods, counted by the plate
The label number is per 100 g. The plate number is what actually lands in front of you. Brunch is where those two ranks flip the most, because a stack of pancakes and a cup of granola are far heavier than one waffle.
| Item | Per 100 g | Portion | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waffle | 291 | One 7-inch, 75 g | 218 |
| Bagel | 275 | One medium, 105 g | 289 |
| Pancakes | 227 | Stack of three, 231 g | 524 |
| Granola | 471 | One cup, 122 g | 575 |
How these numbers were worked out
Each row takes a per-100 g figure from a USDA FoodData Central record and multiplies by the weight of the portion. The waffle uses record 175039, the bagel record 175049, the pancakes record 175009 and the granola record 171646.
The pancake weight is derived: three pancakes at 77 g each make 231 g. For granola, USDA lists 489 per 100 g, which would be 597 per cup; the table uses 471 per 100 g and 575 per cup. Nothing is added on top. No syrup, no butter, no cream cheese.
Why the label and the plate disagree
On the label, the order from lowest to highest is pancakes (227), bagel (275), waffle (291) and granola (471). On the plate, it is waffle (218), bagel (289), pancakes (524) and granola (575). Pancakes go from the lightest food to the second heaviest because a stack of three weighs 231 g, while one waffle weighs 75 g.
Granola is the one that stays on top both ways. It is dense on the label and it is poured by the cup, so there is no portion that makes it small. Everything else changes rank as soon as you count what you actually eat.
How Bao handles it
Take a photo of the plate. Bao reads what it can identify and shows calories for the portion in front of you, not per 100 g. If the stack has two pancakes instead of three, or the granola is half a cup, change the portion on that row. You never type a food name or a weight. Every figure is an AI estimate.
The honest part: the toppings are the part a plate hides. Syrup, butter and cream cheese are not in these numbers, so a real brunch plate will usually come out higher than the table shows.
Common questions
How many calories are in three pancakes? About 524 for a stack of three weighing 231 g, before syrup or butter. This is an estimate worked out from a USDA record, and the stack weight is derived from three pancakes at 77 g each.
Which brunch food has the most calories per portion? Of the four counted here, a cup of granola at about 575 calories for 122 g, just ahead of a stack of three pancakes at 524. A bagel is about 289 and one 7-inch waffle is about 218.
Why do pancakes rank lowest on the label but not on the plate? Per 100 g, pancakes are the lowest of the four at 227. But a stack of three weighs 231 g, so the portion is large, while one waffle is 75 g and one bagel is 105 g.
Do these brunch numbers include syrup, butter or cream cheese? No. Syrup, butter and cream cheese are not counted, so a real plate will usually be higher. Every number here is an estimate for the plain food at the stated weight.
