Calorie Deficit Mexican Food: 5 Orders by Calories
As of October 2026, five common Mexican orders, counted from published numbers, run from about 379 to about 714 calories: a fast-food style bean and cheese burrito is about 379, half of a regular order of chips and guacamole is about 385, two soft ground-beef tacos are about 611, a burrito bowl with chicken, rice, beans, salsa and cheese is about 655, and one cheese quesadilla is about 714. These are estimates. A search for calorie deficit Mexican food usually returns one number per dish, but the portion is what moves it.
Five Mexican orders, ranked by calories
The table shows each order with its source and its portion, so the ranking is not a matter of opinion. Three rows come from USDA FoodData Central records, and two come from Chipotle's published nutrition chart. They are different kinds of sources, so read the order as a guide to which items sit near each other, not as a verdict on any one restaurant.
| Order | Source figure | Portion | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burrito, beans and cheese (fast-food style) | 205 per 100 g (USDA) | 1 burrito, 185 g | 379 |
| Chips and guacamole (Chipotle, regular) | 770 for the order, serves 2 | Half the order | 385 |
| Soft tacos, ground beef, cheese, lettuce | 219 per 100 g (USDA) | 2 tacos, 279 g | 611 |
| Burrito bowl: chicken, white rice, black beans, tomato salsa, cheese | Chipotle, per ingredient | 180 + 210 + 130 + 25 + 110 | 655 |
| Cheese quesadilla | 368 per 100 g (USDA) | 1 quesadilla, 8-10 inch, 194 g | 714 |
Bao has a complaint about the quesadilla, which is that it is a tortilla folded around cheese and then described as a lighter option by nobody. It lands at the top of the table and offers no apology.
How these numbers were worked out
The burrito uses USDA record 172039, fast foods, burrito, with beans and cheese: 205 calories per 100 g, and 185 g for one burrito. The arithmetic is 205 × 1.85 = 379.25, rounded to 379. The tacos use record 167658, Restaurant, Mexican, soft taco with ground beef, cheese and lettuce: 219 per 100 g, and 279 g for two tacos. The arithmetic is 219 × 2.79 = 611.0, rounded to 611. The quesadilla uses record 169035, Restaurant, Mexican, cheese quesadilla: 368 per 100 g, and 194 g for one 8 to 10 inch quesadilla. The arithmetic is 368 × 1.94 = 713.9, rounded to 714.
The chips and guacamole row is from Chipotle's US nutrition chart, which lists a regular order of chips and guacamole at 770 calories and says it serves two. Half of that is 385. If you eat the whole order alone, the number is 770. The burrito bowl is one build from the same chart, at each item's published serving: chicken 180, cilantro-lime white rice 210, black beans 130, fresh tomato salsa 25 and cheese 110. The arithmetic is 180 + 210 + 130 + 25 + 110 = 655. Chipotle lists a burrito bowl anywhere from 420 to 910, so this is one point in a range.
Why the burrito is not the biggest number
The USDA burrito is a fast-food style burrito from an older record, and it weighs 185 g. A burrito built at a build-your-own counter is a different object. Chipotle's own chart lists its burrito at 740 to 1210 calories, because the flour tortilla alone is 320. So the 379 in the table is the small, plain version, and a counter burrito belongs near or above the top of the list. Read the row label, not just the name of the dish.
Fajitas are not in the table because no source with a stated portion was found for them, and a number without a portion is not worth printing.
How Bao handles it
Take a photo of the plate. Bao reads what it can identify and shows calories for the portion in front of you. If you ate one taco instead of two, or half the quesadilla, change the portion on that row. You never type a food name or a weight. Bao reads a taco plate and a bowl of Taiwanese beef noodle soup with the same scan, because it looks at the food on the table and not at which cuisine it belongs to. Every figure is an AI estimate.
The honest part: a photo of chips does not show how many chips there were. The chip basket is the part of a Mexican meal that is easiest to under-count, so check that row first.
